Clad in bright pink leotards, the 17th ranked Arizona State women's gymnastics team placed third in the UNO's Flip for the Cure with a team total of 194.0. At the conclusion of the breast cancer awareness meet, survivors of the disease handed out pink roses to the event winners. No. 7 Stanford placed first with a team score of 195.8 and San Jose State came in second with a score of 194.2. UW - Oshkosh placed fourth with a 181.125.
Sun Devils Freshman Beaté Jones, Tiana Jean and Francesca Mercurio competed all-around. Jean took second in the competition with a 39.025. Jones posted her career-high of a 38.95 placing third in the competition. Mercurio totaled a 38.55.
The Sun Devils started off strong in the first rotation on the vault posting their second-highest team total this season of 49.025. Junior Ashlee Hinkle and Jones led the way both scoring 9.85. Jones posted her career-high taking third in the competition. Freshman Mary Atkinson followed with a solid 9.8. Mercurio stuck her landing to post a 9.775 with Jean following her with a score of 9.75.
The Gym Devils moved to the bars in the second rotation where Jean led the team with a score of 9.85. Mercurio performed a clean, solid routine tying her season-high of a 9.825. Junior Tia Orlando posted a solid 9.775 on the apparatus. Jones followed with a 9.725 after sticking her landing. Bormann scored her season-high a 9.475. The team totaled a 48.65.
The Sun Devils were slightly behind Stanford going to the third rotation and ahead of San Jose State and UW-Oshkosh. With two falls on the beam, the Gym Devils posted a team total of 48.225. Bormann led the team scoring her career-best of 9.825. Jean performed a solid routine scoring a 9.775. Hinkle had a score of 9.75 after sticking her land. Beaté Jones scored her career-best of 9.65. Mercurio and Orlando both fell on beam.
The Sun Devils fell into third place going into the final rotation. The Sun Devils struggled a bit on floor ending with a team total of 48.1. Freshmen Mercurio and Jones led the team with scores of 9.725. Mercurio tied her season-high. Hinkle and Jean both scored a 9.65. Schuett posted a 9.35 in the event.
The Sun Devils host Boise State and Penn State next Friday, March 7. The meet starts at 7 pm at Wells Fargo Arena.
