TEMPE, Ariz. - Members of the Arizona State University track and field program competed in a pair of meets Friday afternoon and collected one NCAA automatic berth and five more provisional standards at meets held throughout the United States. Two women were in action at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., while the remaining athletes competed in events at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
In Fayetteville, the site of the NCAA Indoor Championships in one month, April Kubishta won the women's pole vault championship division, clearing an NCAA automatic mark of 4.20m (13-09.25). Alana Waterford also competed in the event, but did not clear a height.
In Ames, the field events produced four of the five provisional qualifiers, led by Matt Turner, who won the men's long jump with a mark of 7.80m (25-07.25). Sarah Stevens and Jessica Pressley recorded provisional marks in the women's weight throw, placing second in 20.79m (68-02.50) and fourth in 20.40m (66-11.25), respectively, while Jason Lewis earned a provisional mark in the men's weight throw with his toss of 20.19m (66-03.00), which garnered him fourth place. The final provisional came in the women's 60m hurdle preliminary round as Jacquelyn Johnson ran 8.38 to finish fourth overall and advance in the event.
Jasmine Chaney advanced in the 60m hurdles as well, clocking a seasonal-best time of 8.62, which also ranks as the fourth-fastest in school history. Also on the track, Dominique' Maloy placed fourth overall (24.00) and Charonda Williams was fifth (24.15) in the women's 200m dash while Stephanie Garnett (6.05m/19-10.25) took second in the long jump to give ASU a trio of Top 5 finishes. Maloy's time of 24.00 ranks as the fifth-best time in school history.
Numerous Sun Devils will compete in a trio of events Saturday. Many of the team's members will conclude action at the Iowa State Classic while several distance athletes will run at the Husky Classic in Seattle. A trio of current and several other former Sun Devils will also be in action in San Diego as they are set to compete at the USATF Cross Country Championships.
