TEMPE, Ariz. - Four freshmen scored wins with three earning bonus points and the Arizona State University wrestling team snapped a four-dual losing streak as it defeated the visiting Oregon Ducks, 26-16, in a Pac-10 Conference dual inside Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe Sunday afternoon. The victory pushed the Sun Devils to 9-4 overall on the year and 3-4 in the Pac-10 while the Ducks, in their final year as a varsity program, slipped to 9-9 overall and 0-6 in the league.
"We had eight freshman start again for us today and when you can win a Pac-10 dual with eight freshmen in your lineup, it says a lot about the effort this team is putting out," Head Coach Thom Ortiz said. "Patrick Pitsch was injured and we held him out today, so Preston Pruett did the best he could for us. He weighed in at 157 (pounds) and wrestled up at 165 (pounds) and I am proud of how he wrestled for the team and refused to give up. I am always proud of these freshmen because they fight so hard. Four of them winning today is a great sign for our program and shows we are moving forward and preparing for the remainder of the season. Jason Trulson is a great lead and team captain and did a great job today on the mat. And Alex Pavlenko wrestled a tough match and looks like he is back in rhythm. I feel he is going to do well when we get to the Pac-10 Championships next month."
The dual opened at 125 pounds for the second dual in a row and, for the second time in a row, No. 15 Anthony Robles gave the home crowd something to cheer about as he built an 8-0 lead before sticking Joey Lucas at 3:32 for the fall and a 6-0 lead. Fellow freshman Todd Schavrien followed at 133 pounds with a win of his own, staking the Sun Devils to a 9-0 lead with his 19-14 decision over Ryan Dunn. The Sun Devils' advantage grew to 13-0 after Chris Drouin scored a 14-6 major decision over Cody Moulton at 141 pounds.
Elliott Tracy snapped the Sun Devils' winning streak with a close 3-2 decision over Orlando Jimenez at 149 pounds before Alex Pavlenko gave the Sun Devils another victory as he scored an 8-0 major decision at 157 pounds over Kyle Bounds. ASU dropped the next two bouts as Pruett was pinned by Zack Frazier in 3:33 as Pruett moved up one weight class to fill in for an injured Pitsch at 165 pounds. Cory Nelson dropped a 13-4 major decision at 174 pounds to bring the score to 17-13 ASU.
The Sun Devils won the next two bouts to put the dual out of reach with No. 15 Brent Chriswell winning the 184-pound bout by forfeit before Jason Trulson won a 3-0 decision over Shaun Dee at 197 pounds, increasing ASU's lead to 26-13. Charlie Alexander won the heavyweight bought over ASU's Kenny Lester, 5-0, to bring the final score to 26-16 in the team race.
Next up for the Sun Devils will be their final road dual of the season as they travel to Norman, Okla., Friday night for a 7 p.m. dual with the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners.
