The Arizona State swimming and diving teams swept their meets today at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The men topped Pac-10 rival Washington 149-130. The women handily defeated the three teams they faced, Oregon State (209-78), Purdue (201-86) and Washington (176-111). The men are now 3-4 while the women are 9-1.
The divers competed prior to the meet. Billy Sweeney earned an NCAA qualifying dive of 341.63 in the three meter. Brittany Jumer also had an NCAA qualifying dive after scoring 291.38 in the three meter.
The meet started off with the 200 medley relay. The team of Caitlin Andrew, Sara McDaniel, Ashton Aubry and Lindsey Brown finished in 1:44.12, ahead of Purdue and Oregon State's medley teams. The men's team topped Washington in the event, touching in at 1:31.38.
In the men's 1000 free, C.J Nuess handily won, coming in at 9:27.04. The women's 200 free saw Jen Beckberger and Lindsey Brown come in at one and two with times of 1:50.13 and 1:50.64 respectively. Beckberger's time was below the "B" standard. The Sun Devils also went one and two in the men's 200 free. Sean Boyle came in first, clocking in a time of 1:40.07 while teammate Vinicius Waked placed second at 1:41.57.
ASU record-holder Andrew won the women's 100 back with a NCAA consideration time of 55.74. On the men's side, Ante Cvitkovic placed second with a time of 50.81. Sara McDaniel clocked in a time of 1:04.84 in the 100 breast to come in first against Purdue and Oregon State and second against Washington. Lindsey Russenberger was right behind her with a time of 1:05.17.
Andrew and Jamie Martinez came in one and two in the 200 fly. Andrew earned an NCAA consideration after touching in at 2:02.33 while Martinez clocked in at 2:04.41. Boyle placed second in the men's 200 fly at 1:51.19.
The 50 free saw two more Sun Devils go one and two as Beckberger and Jess Perazzo clocked in times of 23.35 and 23.55 respectively. On the men's side, Steve Neuwert and Mohammed Madwa went two and three with times of 20.65 and 21.05 respectively. In the 100 free Beckberger and Brown went one and two again with Beckberger earning another NCAA consideration time with her time of 50.82. Brown touched in at 51.40. Similar to the 50 free, Neuwert and Madwa placed two and three in the 100 free, clocking in times of 45.62 and 46.60 respectively.
Max Laney won the 200 back in 1:51.26, while Nuess earned his second victory of the day by winning the 200 breast in 2:04.51. In the men's 500 free, Vinicius Waked placed second with a time of 4:39.48. In the women's 100 fly, All-American and ASU record holder won with an NCAA consideration time of 54.82. Boyle and Dwelley came in one and two on the men's side, with times of 49.53 and 50.47 respectively. Ashley Evans won the women's 200 IM in 2:05.27 while Nuess earned his third victory with a time of 1:51.48 in the 200 IM.
The meet came to a close with the 200 free relay. ASU's team of Beckberger, Brown, Perazzo and McDaniel came in first at 1:34.02. The men's team of Neuwert, Magnus Kjellberg, Miran Terzic and Madwa came in second at 1:22.79.
The Sun Devil men travel to Dallas next week for the Dallas Morning News Classic. The entire team will compete again on Jan 19 at Minnesota. The Sun Devils will return to Mona Plummer Aquatic Center for their rival meet against Arizona on February 16.
