DALLAS - The Arizona State soccer team defeated SMU, 4-1, Friday in Dallas. The Sun Devils improve their record to 3-2-0, while the Mustangs fell for the first time this season and are 2-1-0 overall.
SMU scored in the first minute of the game off a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead. It was the only score of the first half for either team.
The Sun Devils came out of the halftime break with a new mentality. Sophomore Carly Kallas found the goal first for the Sun Devils. Off a corner kick by senior Kyleyn Felts, Kallas got her head on the ball and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. It was Kallas' first goal of the season, as well as Felts' first assist on the year.
"We woke them up a little at halftime," head coach Kevin Boyd said. "We were organized and played hard; we did what we discussed at the break and came up with the win."
The game-winner for ASU came in the 70th minute of play, where once again Kallas got her head on the ball for the score. This time the ball came off a free kick from 40 yards out taken by junior Kylla Sjoman. The game-winner was Kallas' second of her career. The assist marked the first for Sjoman this season.
The third goal for the Sun Devils came in the 77th minute of play, as the SMU goal keeper, Ashley Gunter, attempted to clear the ball, but senior Courtney Crane intercepted it and found the back of the net. The goal was the first for Crane on the season and the 12th overall for her career.
Senior Alissa Oldenkamp capped off the scoring for ASU during the 81st minute, as she received a pass from freshman Karin Volpe down the left sideline. Oldenkamp's shot came from outside the goal box as she found the top corner of the net. It marked the first goal of the season for Oldenkamp and the first assist of Volpe's career.
The Sun Devils outplayed the Mustangs in the second half as they took seven shots and three corner kicks, while denying SMU from any opportunities at their goal.
"The player for us that really changed the momentum was Rachel Newell," Boyd said. "She came in and sparked our team."
Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Silvestri recorded the win for the Sun Devils as she came up with two saves on the game.
The Sun Devils remain in Texas for a match against the TCU Horned Frogs Sunday at 1 p.m. local time (11 a.m. AZ) in Fort Worth, Texas.
