BERKELEY, Calif. - Even as Katie Burkhart gave up one hit and struck out 14 on the day, the effort wasn't enough as the No. 7 Sun Devil Softball team fell to the Cal Golden Bears, 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Berkeley. The loss drops ASU to 45-12 overall and 9-5 in conference play as Cal improves to 29-27 overall and 3-11 in the Pac-10
The Golden Bears claimed the one and only lead they'd need in the fifth, as the game proved to be a pitching battle between Katie Burkhart and Marissa Drewrey. Burkhart pitched a no-hit game through four innings until the fifth when Vernae Sevill took a 3-2 pitch deep to left field to break the deadlock and push Cal up 1-0.
The Sun Devils threatened with runners in the sixth and a double from Jackie Vasquez in the seventh, but were unable to bring a run across the board, giving Cal only their third win in conference play.
The Sun Devils will have a chance for retribution tomorrow as they face the Golden Bears again. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start time in Berkeley.
