TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 27 ASU Women's Tennis team returned to form as they made a perfect 7-0 sweep over the Cornell Big Red Tuesday afternoon at ASU's Whiteman Tennis Center. The Sun Devils are now 8-6 overall with Pac-10 play resuming this weekend.
The Devils came out ready to play in doubles with Rebecca Rankin and Laila Abdala leading the way with an 8-2 win over Kasia Preneta and Tamera John. Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch sealed the doubles point behind them with an 8-3 victory in the two spot. The ninth-ranked duo of Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke also pulled in a win, grabbing an 8-4 mark over Susan Sullivan and Elizabeth Googe for their 16th win of the season.
In singles action, the Devils showed no slack to the Big Red as they took each match in straight sets, with seniors, Sabrina Capannolo and Kady Pooler winning near-perfect matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 respectively.
Ranked 29th in the country, freshman Nadia Abdala took her 16th win of the season as well, beating the Big Red's Elizabeth Googe 6-1, 6-2 in the two spot. The win ties her for first place in wins on the team with senior Sabrina Capannolo.
The Sun Devils return to action this weekend as they head to Tucson to take on Pac-10 and in-state foe Arizona. The Devils will face the 'Cats on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m. PT.
