FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Arizona State University track and field team sent athletes north to compete in the Southwest Invitational Saturday morning with several of the Sun Devils posting solid marks in the field of the event held inside the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz. The meet also served as the final preparations for the Sun Devils before they head to next weekend's MPSF event in Seattle.

Overall, the women won three events and posted one NCAA automatic and two NCAA provisional qualifying standards on the day while the men added one automatic and two provisional qualifiers of their own. The winning women included Stephanie Garnett in the long jump (6.04m/19-09.75), Jessica Pressley in the shot put with an NCAA provisional toss of 16.70m (54-09.50) and Sarah Stevens in the weight throw with her mark of 20.28m (66-06.50), also a provisional qualifier. Stevens' mark also ranks as the third-best in school history while in the same event, Tai Battle, recorded the fourth-best throw of 18.51m (60-08.75) in school history.

The final women's national qualifier came from April Kubishta in the pole vault as she cleared the automatic mark for the second time this season, this time clearing 4.22m (13-10.00). On the men's side, Ryan Whiting picked up the automatic berth in the shot put with his second-place toss of 19.56m (64-02.25), being defeated by only U.S. Olympian John Godina. In the same event, two men provisionally qualified for the national meet, including Jason Lewis and Tomas Navarro with their marks of 18.14m (59-06.25) and 17.80m (58-04.75), respectively.

Kelvin Love Jr., took second in the 200m dash in 21.56, with only former Sun Devil All-American Seth Amoo finishing ahead of him. Domenik Peterson just missed a provisional qualifier in the 400m dash as his 47.36 in the event was just 0.09 off the needed mark.

Next weekend, the Sun Devils will head to Seattle, Wash., and the Dempsey Indoor Facility on the Washington campus for the 2007 MPSF Indoor Championships on February 24-25.
