Palos Verdes, Calif. - The second-ranked Arizona State women's golf team moves into second place at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estate, Calif. ASU shot a 30-over 598 (300-298) at the par-71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club.
"Today was an interesting day," said Head Coach Melissa Luellen. "We played really well most of the day."
ASU golfers Liisa Kelo and Anna Nordqvist were penalized in the second round for inadvertently violating USGA rules.
"Liisa Kelo actually shot even-par and then had a two-shot penalty we had to tack on," said Luellen. "Anna shot a 72 and had to tack on a two-shot penalty. They gave each other advice and that is forbidden in USGA rules. There was a little confusion because in Europe you are allowed to give each other advice."
Kelo is a redshirt freshman and Nordqvist is a freshman.
Leading the Sun Devils for the second straight day was sophomore All-American Azahara Munoz, who shot a 6-over 148 (77-76) to tie for sixth. Nordqvist, freshman Juliana Murcia and sophomore All-American Jennifer Osborn are all currently tied for 18th after shooting a 9-over 151. Kelo shot a 12-over 154 in the second round to tie for 28th.
"We are going to have a good day tomorrow," said Luellen. "We are down four shots and we can make it up on one hole."
The final round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge concludes tomorrow.
