LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Patrick Pitsch ran off three victories on the day and finished in fourth place at the 26th Cliff Keen/Las Vegas Invitational inside the Las Vegas Convention Center Saturday evening to lead the Arizona State University wrestling team to a 25th-place finish. Pitsch, ranked third in the nation at 165 pounds, was the lone Sun Devil to place in the event.
The tournament's No. 2 seed, Pitsch rebounded from a loss in the quarterfinals on Friday night to win three bouts in a row on Saturday to move into the consolation finals where he medically forfeited the bout to take fourth place. Pitsch opened the day with a convincing 4-0 decision over sixth-seeded and 15th-ranked Zach Shanaman (Penn) to guarantee a placement in the Top 8. From there, Pitsch defeated Kurt Swatz (Boise State), 6-3, before advancing to the third-place match with his 5-4 decision over fifth-seeded and ninth-ranked Stephen Dwyer (Nebraska). For the weekend, Pitsch went 5-1 and brought his career record to 74-38.
One other Sun Devil competed on the day as senior Jason Trulson dropped a close 3-1 decision in his consolation sixth round bout. At 197 pounds, the fifth-seeded and14th-ranked Sun Devil fell to eighth-seeded and 17th-ranked Pat Bradshaw (Edinboro) needing just one win to guarantee a placement in the Top 8 of the tournament.
Following some time off, the Sun Devils will return to Nevada as they will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno on December 19.
