The Arizona State wrestling team held its annual wrestle-offs this afternoon in the Riches Wrestling Complex in Tempe, Ariz.. The Maroon Team, coached by wrestling alum C.B. Dolloway, handily defeated the Gold Team, coached by alum Ryan Bader 60-10.
The Sun Devils started out in the 125 weight class. After earning a fast lead in the first period, Anthony Robles held on to a 13-7 decision over Angel Alegre. Also in the 125 weight class, David Prado of the Maroon team had the first fall of the day in 5:19 over Ryan Taylor of the Gold team.
The team moved onto the 133 weight class as Todd Schavrien recorded a 14-3 major decision over Danny Galvan to put the Gold team on the board. Tyler Bowles pinned Steve Contino at the very end of the second period to give the Maroon team six points in the second 133 match of the day. In the 141 class, Maroon team member Chris Drouin scored one takedown in the second period and went on to defeat Orlando Jimenez 5-1.
In the 149 weight class, Preston Pruett of the Maroon team earned a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second to defeat Lucas Mariacher of the Gold team 3-2. Vicente Varela recorded the lone tech. fall of the day as he scored a late third period takedown to defeat Jerrad Trulson of the Gold team 20-5. Moving onto the 157 weight class, Jalonn Wilkins earned a 7-2 decision over Josh Calteux of the Gold team. Cory Nelson of the Maroon downed Sal Musto of the Gold team in 2:35 in the first match of the 165 weight class. Kyle DeBerry of the Maroon Team earned a third period escape to defeat Michael Swigart 1-0, also in the 165 weight class.
The last four matches of the day ended in falls. In the 174 weight class, senior Rick Renzi pinned Jeff Cappellini in 1:24. Brent Chriswell of the Gold team recorded his team's lone fall as he pinned Chris Jones of the Maroon team in 30 second in the 184 class. Senior Jason Trulson of the Maroon team overcame Thor Moen in the third period, pinning him in 4:35 in the 197 weight class. Junior heavyweight Quinton Pruett pinned Imanibom Etukeren in the final bout of the day in 4:56.
The Sun Devils travel to UC Davis this Friday, November 9 to take on the Aggies in a Pac-10 match. Their first home match is on November 25 against Embry Riddle at 2:00 p.m.
