SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The Arizona State University women's cross country team placed third and the men finished sixth as the Sun Devils competed in the NCAA West Region Championships Saturday at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ore., with both teams looking to qualify for the NCAA Championships. With only the Top 2 teams automatically advancing to the national meet, both teams will now await word from the NCAA selection committee on Sunday night.

The men led off the day in the 10,000m race and scored 141 points to finish sixth overall. Oregon won the meet with 47 points and was followed by Portland (76), the region's two automatic qualifiers. The Top 5 was rounded out by Stanford (100), California (112) and Cal Poly (116). The women's 6,000m race saw the Sun Devils place third with 106 points while the region's automatic berths went to winner Stanford (33) and Oregon (72). The Top 5 was rounded out by Washington (118) and UC Santa Barbara (143).

Kyle Alcorn (7th in 30:12.15) and Jeff Helmer (14th in 30:30.60) led the way for the men as both finished among the Top 25 overall to earn all-region accolades. The women's Top 4 finishers each placed among the Top 25 overall to earn all-region honors as well, including Jenna Kingma (8th in 20:41.30), Ali Kielty (11th in 20:45.80), Camille Olson (23rd in 21:02.85) and Kari Hardt (25th in 21:08.80).

The men's Top 5 team scorers were rounded out by Alonso Contreras (35th in 31:03.75), Joey Heller (37th in 31:05.80) and Garrett Kelly (48th in 31:22.95). Also running for the men were Mikias Gelagle (67th in 31:50.45) and Ben Engelhardt (81st in 32:16.70). Krystal Duke (39th in 21:24.90) was the final scorer for the women with Angela Spadafino (46th in 21:34.90) and Whitney Lemieux (67th in 21:50.80) also running in the meet.

Both teams will now await word from the NCAA Selection Committee to see if they have been invited into the NCAA Championships set for Monday, November 19, in Terre Haute, Ind. The selections will be announced at 6 p.m. CST (4 p.m. Arizona) on Sunday.
