TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's soccer team was defeated by No. 18 California, 3-1, Friday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Sun Devils drop to 3-2-0 in conference play and 9-7-0 overall. The Golden Bears picked up their first Pac-10 win and moved to 1-3-0 in conference play and 9-5-0 overall.
The Sun Devils got on the scoreboard first as junior defender Kylla Sjoman's free kick got past Cal goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini in the fifth minute of play. The goal was Sjoman's second of the season.
The Golden Bears fought back in the first half when junior Valerie Barnes found freshman Alex Morgan to tie the score at 1-1 going into the halftime break.
"I thought Cal played well in the first part of the first half and we out played them in the last 20 minutes," said ASU head coach Kevin Boyd. "And again in the second half, Cal jumped out again in the beginning. They brought a little more. They had 13 [Alex Morgan]. Thirteen is quite a player."
Cal kept up the intensity to take a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute of play. Senior Kristine Relja passed the ball to junior Nikki Schrey who then flicked the ball to senior Stephanie Wieger for the score.
The Sun Devils had several opportunities, but were unable to finish on their shots. For the game, ASU out shot Cal 12-9.
The Golden Bears added a final goal as time was winding down. Morgan chipped the ball from 10 yards outside the goal box over ASU goalkeeper Briana Silvestri to make the final count 3-1.
Silvestri had four saves in the loss for ASU.
Up next, ASU plays its final home game of the regular season when it hosts No. 4 Stanford on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
