ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Arizona State University track and field team opened its 2007 indoor season with several strong performances in a pair of events conducted inside the Albuquerque Convention Center Friday as members of the team took part in the final day of the Roger Cox Multis as well as the first day of the Dan DeHart Invitational. Overall, five individuals recorded marks good enough to add their names to the NCAA's provisional qualifying list while two Sun Devils won their events. Five members also recorded marks that ranked among the all-time Top 5 in ASU annals while one mark reset the school record.
In the team standings, the women are in second place with 28 points with Kansas State leading the way with 32 points. On the men's side, the Sun Devils stand fourth with 14 points while California leads with 21 points.
April Kubishta tied for first place in the women's pole vault with a provisional qualifying and school record mark of 4.17m (13-8.25). It marked the second week in a row she reset her own school record, bettering her clearance of 4.15m (13-7.75) at the Pole Vault Summit. Kubishta was joined on top of the podium by Matt Turner, who won the long jump in his Sun Devil debut with a leap of 7.60m (24-11.25).
Jacquelyn Johnson scored 3,855 points in the pentathlon and Joshua Kinnaman scored 5,408 points in the heptathlon as part of the Roger Cox Multis with both provisionally qualifying for the national meet. They were joined by ASU's final provisional qualifier, Jessica Pressley, who place third in the weight throw with a mark of 19.10m (62-08.00).
On the record ledgers, Jason Lewis finished fifth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 17.60m (57-09.00) in his first meet as a Sun Devil and claimed the No. 3 position on the all-time ASU lists. In the women's weight throw, Sarah Stevens also moved into the No. 3 spot on the all-time ledger as her mark of 18.70m (61-04.25) placed her fifth in the event. On the track, a pair of hurdlers also earned a place on the Top 5 lists as Marquis Profit improved upon his No. 3 time with a mark of 8.14 while freshman Jasmine Chaney recorded the fifth-fastest women's time in the 60m hurdles with her time of 8.83.
Along with Turner, Chaney and Lewis, two others made their Sun Devil debuts at the meet as both Rodney Glass and Kyle Anderson competed. Glass placed sixth in the preliminaries of the 60m dash in 6.93, just behind teammate and fifth-place finisher Kelvin Love Jr. (6.88) as both advanced to the finals. Anderson did not record a mark in the long jump.
The DeHart Invitational concludes Saturday.
