TEMPE, Ariz. - It was a night of career and season highs as the No. 21 Arizona State women's gymnastics team took second at the annual UNO's Classic with a season-high 196.275. The No. 9 Oklahoma Sooners took first with 196.400 and the California Golden Bears placed third scoring a 190.900.
Dynamic senior Cassandra Jusino led the Sun Devils, placing second in the all-around with a season-high 39.400. Sophomore Nicole Harris took third scoring a 39.350 and seniors April Boone and Lauren Powell placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with scores of 39.250 and 39.125. Powell's score marked her season-high all-around score.
Leading off on vault, the Sun Devils posted a 48.875. Boone tied for first with a season-high 9.850. Jusino recorded a 9.825 to tie for third and Harris posted a solid 9.800, placing sixth. Vanessa Rocca continued to improve her vault score with a career-high 9.725. Sophomore Ashlee Hinkle and Powell scored a 9.625 and 9.600, respectively. Carrie Finley also competed on vault in exhibition, scoring a 9.500. The Golden Bears scored a 47.950 on vault while Oklahoma won the apparatus with a 48.925.
The Sun Devils then moved to bars and posted the team's season-high on the event, 48.875. Powell lead the Devils with a 9.850 to place second. Jusino and senior Lisa Lanza each scored a 9.775. Lanza's 9.775 tied her career-high on bars. Harris posted the next highest score for the Sun Devils with a 9.750. Boone recorded a 9.725. Freshman Kaitlynn Bormann made her Sun Devil debut on bars in an exhibition with a 9.375. The Sooners won the bars with 49.100 while Cal posted a 47.425.
The ASU gymnasts shined on beam, compiling their highest score of the season, a 49.325 to place first. Returning All-American Harris took first, executing a beautiful routine to achieve a career-high 9.950. Jusino also scored her career-high with a 9.925 to tie for second. Hinkle and Powell both tied their season-high, with scores of 9.850 and 9.800 respectively. Sophomore Tiana Jean made her debut in this season's beam lineup posting her career-high, a 9.750. Boone scored a 9.725 to finish off the Sun Devil lineup. In exhibition, Bormann made her beam debut. The freshman scored a very impressive 9.800. Oklahoma scored a 49.300 and Cal posted a 47.475.
The Devils took the floor on the last rotation. The team surpassed its previous season-high and scored a 49.200, winning the last event. The Sun Devils continued to achieve career and season highs as Boone posted a 9.950, a score she had previously scored in an exhibition her freshman year. Boone took first on floor. Jusino placed second with a season-high 9.875. Harris and Powell also had season highs with scores of 9.850 and 9.825 respectively. Another career high was made as Jean scored a 9.700. Finley performed in an exhibition on floor, posting a 9.525. The Sooners took second with a 49.075 while the Golden Bears finished with a 48.050.
The Sun Devils have a week off before they travel to Tucson, Ariz., to take on intrastate rival the No. 14 Arizona Wildcats on Friday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. MT.
