CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Arizona State University wrestling team opened a two-dual road trip in the Pacific Northwest Friday night with a 31-10 setback at No. 19 Oregon State in a Pac-10 Conference dual in Corvallis, Ore. The Sun Devils slipped to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10 while the host Beavers improved to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
The dual opened at heavyweight where Thor Moen dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 15 Ty Watterson, giving the hosts an early 4-0 lead. John Espinoza put the visitors on the board at 125 pounds when he scored a 9-4 decision over Jake Gonzales. From there, the Beavers won a decision at 133, a technical fall at 141 and a win by forfeit at 149 to increase their lead to 18-3.
No. 5 Brian Stith halted the OSU winning streak by extending his own winning ways, capturing his 10th victory in a row with a 9-4 decision over Keegan Davis at 157 pounds. Stith, now 18-2 overall on the year and 12-1 in duals, moved into the Top 10 on the all-time dual wins list at ASU, tying Eddie Urbano for 10th overall with 52 wins.
Following Stith's win, the hosts added a fall at 165 pounds and a major decision at 174 to extend their lead to 28-6. Greg Gifford picked up the final victory for the Sun Devils at 184 as he scored a 10-2 major decision to make it 28-10 before the Beavers won the final bout of the evening, a decision at 197.
The Sun Devils remain in the state of Oregon for one more dual as they are set to take on Oregon at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon in Eugene.
