TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's gymnastics team posted a season-high 195.275 but No. 6 UCLA squeaked past the Sun Devils with a score of 195.725. UCLA's Tasha Schwikert won the all-around with a 39.450. Senior captain April Boone took second with a season-high 39.350. Cassandra Jusino placed third with a 39.200. Nicole Harris (38.725) and Lauren Powell (38.575) also competed in the all-around for ASU. Anna Li (UCLA) compiled a 39.0.
The Sun Devils started strong on vault, winning the event with a season-high 49.125. Powell took first with a season-high 9.850. Boone, Harris, and Jusino each posted a 9.825 on the apparatus to tie for second with UCLA's Jordan Schwikert. Ashlee Hinkle recorded a 9.8, her season high, to tie for seventh with UCLA's Ashley Peckett. Freshman Kaitlynn Bormann made her Sun Devil debut on vault, scoring 9.725. UCLA recorded a 48.8.
On bars the Devils compiled a season-high 48.8. Jusino was the leading Devil with a 9.85 to tie for fourth with UCLA's Ariana Berlin. Bruin Tasha Schwikert took first with a 9.9, while her teammates Jordan Schwikert and Li tied for second. Boone and Harris each recorded 9.8, a season high for both. Powell posted a 9.775 on the apparatus. UCLA won the event with a 49.3.
The Sun Devils competed on the beam in the third rotation, winning the event with a season-high 48.975. Boone and Hinkle were the leading scorers for the Devils with 9.825 each. They tied for second behind UCLA's Tasha Schwikert (9.9). Powell, Jusino and Toner each recorded 9.775. This score marked a new career high for Toner. UCLA recorded a 48.475.
The Devils had a chance to take the lead during floor, as UCLA struggled on beam, but had to record a fall. They took second on the event with a 48.375. Boone won floor with a season high 9.9. Harris also recorded a season-high with a 9.85 to tie for second with UCLA's Tasha Schwikert and Janelle Dantzscher. Jusino and Toner both also had solid routines for the Devils, posting 9.75 and 9.7 respectively. UCLA won the apparatus with a 49.15.
Next week the Sun Devils travel to Corvallis, Ore., to take on the No. 13 Oregon State Beavers on Friday, February 2, at 7:00 p.m. PT.
