HAMPTON, Va. - The see-saw weekend of competition for the Arizona State University wrestling team continued Saturday afternoon as the Sun Devils dropped a 29-13 decision to Bloomsburg at the 27th Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The loss not only dropped the Sun Devils 4-8 overall on the year, but also sent the maroon and gold to the seventh-place dual later in the day.
For the first time this weekend, the Sun Devils dropped the first bout of the dual as No. 10 Mike Sees scored an 18-10 major decision over John Espinoza to stake Bloomsburg to a 4-0 lead. Following another major decision loss at 133 pounds, Robert Galvan picked up his first win of the weekend to cut the deficit to 8-3, but BU scored a fall at 149 pounds to give it a 14-3 lead.
The 157 bout saw No. 6 Brian Stith score his third major decision victory in a row, this time with a 13-4 score over Dennis Bermudez, to cut the deficit in half (14-7). Trailing 20-7 after forfeiting at 165 pounds, Alex Pavlenko won a 7-4 decision to bring the Sun Devils to within 10 points following the 174 pound bout, but a loss at 184 extended the BU lead to 13 points with two bouts remaining and assuring the Sun Devils a loss. At 197 pounds, Jason Trulson scored a 5-1 decision for three more team points, but the Sun Devils' Quinton Pruett was pinned in the heavyweight bout to end the team scoring at 29-13.
The Sun Devils will next face North Dakota State for seventh place.
