IRVINE, Calif. - The 2006 season of Arizona State University soccer opened in grand fashion Friday night as the Sun Devils, behind a two-goal performance from freshman Brittney Doty, blanked host UC Irvine, 3-0, at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif. ASU stands 1-0-0 on the season while the Anteaters fall to 0-1-0.

With three rookies in the starting line up, the Sun Devils applied pressure early and took the lead with Doty's first collegiate goal in the 23rd minute of play. UCI goalkeeper Erin Henry misplayed the ball leading to Kylla Sjoman passing to Doty who found the back of the net.

Following the intermission, the Sun Devils broke the match open as they scored twice in a span of four minutes to seal the victory. In the 61st minute, Doty again scored with an unusual assist as the rookie forward collected a clearance pass from starting keeper Kim Bingham before driving in and scoring. Bingham, who ended the match with five saves, was credited with the first point of her collegiate career. ASU wasted little time capitalizing again as Courtney Crane found the back of the net after accepting a pass from Alissa Oldenkamp.

In all, 18 of ASU's 23 available players saw time on the pitch, including seven rookies and two others that did not see action for the squad last year. Bingham, who recorded the victory in goal, collected five saves, including four in the first half, while playing 85 minutes before Briana Silvestri took over the final five minutes of play.

The Sun Devils will return home for a 7 p.m. match on Monday, Aug. 28, when they take on Loyola College on `Monday Night Futbol.' All fans wearing football or futbol team apparel will receive a discounted admission of $2 for the match inside Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
