TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2006 ASU Invitational came to a close Saturday night with members of the Arizona State University track and field team posting solid results at its second home meet in as many weekends on Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium. In all, the Sun Devils combined for seven event victories, 26 Top 3 finishes and 13 marks earning NCAA regional entrance.
On the women's side, four events were won by Sun Devil athletes, including the 4x400m relay of Shauntel Elcock, Christina Hardeman, Jordan Durham and Latosha Wallace, who not only won the event in 3:39.53, but also broke the meet record. Wallace also added an individual victory of her own by capturing the 400m hurdles in 58.70 while also qualifying for the regional event. Corey Randall won the 3,000m run in 9:44.56 while Brooke Bennett won the 3,000m steeplechase with a regional mark of 10:35.43.
The men once again shined in the sprints with Domenik Peterson winning the 100m dash for the second weekend in a row with a mark of 10.51 while Kelvin Love Jr., repeated in the 200m dash with a time of 21.20. Both marks missed the regional cut-off by 0.01 seconds. Brandon Glenn won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.05m and also earned a regional berth.
Other regional marks for the women included Hardeman in the 400m dash (53.78), Jenna Kingma (4:25.87) and Victoria Jackson (4:27.19) in the 1,500m run, April Kubishta (3.80m) in the pole vault and discus throwers Jessica Pressley (53.34m) and Sarah Stevens (51.63m). On the men's side, regional qualifiers included Ryan Warrenburg (3:46.93) and Aaron Aguayo (3:47.24) in the 1,500m run, Tomas Navarro (51.97m) in the discus and the 4x100m relay of Steven Koehnemann, Peterson, Jimmie Gordon and Love Jr. (40.61).
ASU will divide its ranks next weekend as a pair of meets are on the slate for the Sun Devils. Several competitors will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational while other members of the team will compete in the Arizona International in Tucson.
