TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior F Emily Westerberg (15 points) and junior G Reagan Pariseau (10 points) combined for 25 points as the Arizona State women's basketball team defeated Love and Basketball 72-46 in an exhibition game played Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils took control of the game by using a 29-10 run over the final 12-plus minutes of the first half to take a 41-20 lead at the half. Senior F Aubree Johnson scored all eight of her points in the first half to pace the Sun Devils in the game's first 20 minutes.
"We've still got a long way to go before we play our first real game," ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne said. "This was a really good opportunity for our new players to get game experience. I was really pleased with the way the freshmen performed. I thought they did a good job of maintaining aggressiveness throughout the game."
Freshman F Kayli Murphy led ASU with nine rebounds to go along with four points and two steals. Fellow freshman G Dymond Simon added eight points, three assists and three rebounds with only one turnover in 21 minutes of action.
Westerberg earned almost half her points at the line as she hit seven-of-nine free throw attempts. Pariseau was three-of-four from the field, including a perfect two-of-two from three-point range. Sophomore G Briann January also added nine points for ASU.
The Sun Devil defense held Love and Basketball to 31.6 percent shooting for the game. Love and Basketball was led by G Aja Parham, who had 12 points in 22 minutes.
The Sun Devils return to action on Monday night (6:30 p.m.) when they take on Vanguard University in their second and final exhibition game. Admission to the game is free.
