FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The 2006 indoor season got under way for the Arizona State University track and field program Saturday morning as several members of the Sun Devil roster traveled north to Flagstaff, Ariz., and the Walkup Skydome to compete in the 2006 Lumberjack Invitational. In all, seven women and two men represented ASU on the track and in the field.
On the women's side, Stephanie Garnett (Fr., Winslow, Ariz.) made her ASU debut on the track as she finished fifth in the 60m dash at 8.06 following a fourth-place showing of 7.92 in the preliminaries. In the field, Garnett also placed third in the long jump with a top mark of 6.02m (19-09.00). She was joined on the track by Jacquelyn Johnson (So., Yuma, Ariz.), who finished third overall (8.53) and second in the preliminary round (8.55) of the 60m hurdles. Johnson, the 2004 NCAA champion in the outdoor heptathlon and runner-up in the indoor pentathlon, also finished sixth in the long jump with a mark of 5.56m (18-03.00).
Also in the field, five Sun Devil women competed in the pole vault with Cara Walker (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif.) and April Kubishta (So., Lake Havasu City, Ariz.) leading the way as they tied for third place with a top clearance of 3.80m (12-05.50). Alana Waterford (So., Mesa, Ariz.) tied for fifth place at 3.50m (11-05.75) while a pair of rookies, Megan Hunt (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Carly Gietler (Mesa, Ariz.), both tied for eighth with a clearance of 3.35m (10-11.75). Kubishta's mark was the third-best in ASU history while Waterford's mark would go down as the sixth-best.
On the men's side, Hank Rogers (Sr., Eager, Ariz.) both competed in the pole vault finishing tied for fifth and tied for 11th, respectively. Glenn finished with a top clearance of 4.90m (16-00.75) while Rogers' mark was 4.60m (15-01.00).
The Sun Devil team will head back to Flagstaff next weekend as a full roster will compete in the Arizona-California Challenge, joining Arizona, Northern Arizona, California and UCLA in a dual team meet.
