TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- After the first day of competition at the women's swimming Pac-10 meet in Long Beach, Calif., the Sun Devils are tied for sixth place with 94 points.

Arizona State University women's swimming competed in two events Wednesday including the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team touched the wall in 1:41.73 to record the team's fastest time this season in the 200-yard medley relay and take sixth place. In the event, sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) led off with the backstroke, senior Heidi Schmidt (Visalia, Calif.) swam breaststroke, senior Laura Ullrich (Centrevill, Va.) swam the butterfly and freshman Jen Beckberger (Ajax, Ontario) anchored with the freestyle.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, ASU finished in seventh place with a time of 7:23.21. The time is ASU's fastest in the event this season. Sophomore Ellis Schieman, (Shaker Heights, Ohio) led off the relay for the Sun Devils with senior Sandra Steffensen (Treeleborg, Sweden) and Beckberger following with senior Sally Brown (Andover, Mass.) swimming anchor.

Competition continues for the women's swimming team at the Pac-10 meet tomorrow in Long Beach, Calif. The Pac-10 diving championships will begin Thursday in Federal Way, Wash.
