TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- Arizona State University men's and women's swimming and diving were defeated Saturday by Stanford (men No.2, women No. 3). The No. 23 men fell to the Cardinal 144-93 while the women's team dropped its meet to Stanford 182-112.
On the women's side, sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) captured the title in the 100-yard butterfly and finished in second place in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Amy Konowalik (Derby, England) touched the wall in 2:17.72 to take first place in the 200-yard breaststroke. Konowalik also finished just behind teammate senior Heidi Schmidt (Visalia, Calif.) in the 100-yard breaststroke. In diving, junior Cassidy Farwell (Glendale, Calif.) finished second in the three-meter and third in the one-meter.
For the men, sophomore C.J. Nuess recorded the team's fastest time this season in the 1,650-yard freestyle by touching the wall in 15:14.68 to take first place. Sophomore Lucas Azevedo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) finished in second place in the 500-yard freestyle for the Sun Devils. In diving, senior Joona Puhakka (Helsinki, Finland) captured first place in both the three-meter and one-meter events.
The Sun Devils are off for two weeks before hosting intrastate rival Arizona Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. MST at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
