Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - UCLA's Lisa Dodd threw a one-hit shutout and the12th-ranked Bruins (28-15, 9-9 Pac-10) used the power of three home runs to defeat Arizona State University (28-22, 3-15 Pac-10), 8-0, in five innings on Sunday. The game marked the last home regular season contest for head coach Linda Wells, who is retiring at the end of the season, her 16th at ASU.

In the first inning, UCLA took a commanding 5-0 lead off four hits. Andrea Duran led off with a single to left and advanced to second on a fielding error by Valerie Sevilla. Duran then advanced to third on a wild pitch by ASU starter Ashley Werschky (5-2). After Tara Henry walked and stole second, Caitlin Benyi walked to load the bases. Emily Zaplatosch followed with a single to center to score Duran and Henry, while Jodie Lagaspi doubled to right center to plate Benyi. Desiree Serrano then relived Werschky, but UCLA still tagged on its fourth run off a sacrifice fly and the fifth run when Dodd doubled to right field to score Lagaspi.

The Bruins followed with another run to push the lead to 6-0 when Lagaspi led off the third inning with a solo home run over the left field fence.

In the fourth inning, UCLA hit two more solo home runs over the left field fence, one each from Duran and Benyi to extend the lead to 8-0. Katie Burkhart relived Serrano and got the next two Bruins to ground out and end the inning.

Werschky was the only Devil to get a base hit off Dodd (9-5), a single in the first inning.

Up next, ASU will hit the road for their final three games, starting with Stanford on Friday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m.
