TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked UCLA Bruins softball team (27-15, 8-9 Pac-10) defeated Arizona State University (28-21, 3-14 Pac-10), 6-1, Saturday night in front of 1,188 fans, the seventh largest crowd to attend a game at Farrington Stadium.
UCLA jumped on the Sun Devils for five runs in the third inning off three errors and a grand slam. Lisa Dodd led off with a single and advanced to second when left fielder Valerie Sevilla dropped an Andrea Duran fly ball. Tara Henry followed with a sacrifice bunt back to ASU starting pitcher Katie Burkhart (10-12), but Burkhart misplayed the ball to load the bases. Caitlin Benyi then hit a grand slam to right center field to unload the bases. UCLA tagged on the fifth run of the inning when shortstop Rhiannon Baca misfired on a fielder's choice throw to first base, allowing Emily Zaplatosch to score from second.
The Bruins added their sixth run in the fourth inning when Dodd led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence.
ASU had its first chance to score in the fifth inning. With one out, Kim Zadrozny worked a walk off UCLA starting pitcher Anjelica Selden (17-10). Zadrozny then advanced to second on a Selden wild pitch and to third on a pass ball. However, Selden got a ground out and a strike out to end the threat.
The Sun Devils then broke through in the sixth inning when Sevilla hit a solo home run over the center field fence, her seventh of the year.
Selden then struck out the side in the seventh to end the game. She finished with 13 strikeouts and allowed three hits and one run. Burkhart took the loss, giving up six hits and six runs, only one earned with seven strikeouts. Sevilla led the ASU offense with a 2 for 3 game.
Up next, ASU and UCLA will close out the regular home season for the Sun Devils on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
