TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State University track and field team played host to the annual Double Dual with Arizona and Northern Arizona Saturday at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium as both the men and women swept their intrastate rivals on the strength of 25 victories and three school records. Overall, the ASU men defeated UA, 108-91, while the Sun Devil women won their portion of the meet over the Wildcats, 116-81. Against the Lumberjacks, ASU's men won, 132-40, while the women took the victory, 131-55.
Five individuals and one relay turned in solid performances with three of the individuals winning multiple events. On the women's side, Porchea Carroll captured gold in the 100m dash, 200m dash and long jump events to lead they way while Alana Waterford did her part with victories in the high jump and triple jump. Trevell Quinley rounded out the multiple wins with top finishes in the long jump and high jump.
Along with the multiple wins came three school records. For the men, the 4x100m relay of Steven Koehnemann, Domenik Peterson, Seth Amoo and Kelvin Love clocked in at 38.71 to shatter the previous school mark set in 1979 (38.79 by Ron Brown, LaMonte King, Greg Moore and Dwayne Evans). The women had two records broken as Jessica Pressley topped her own hammer mark and Angela Tavlarides did the same to her own pole vault clearance. The relay time and Pressley's hammer mark, along with Julia Pedersen's winning throw in the shot put, all stand as meet records as well.
Of the 19 events contested by each gender, ASU student-athletes combined to sweep 12. In all, a Sun Devil male and female took first place in the following events: 3,000m steeplechase, 4x100m relay, 400m dash, 100m dash, 200m dash, 4x400m relay, hammer throw, javelin, pole vault, high jump, long jump and triple jump.
The Sun Devil men led the way with regards to the number of NCAA West Region qualifiers as they collected 19 marks good enough to gain entrance into the meet while the women collected 14 of their own.
Next up for the Sun Devils will be the start of the 2005 Pac-10 Championships. The heptathlon and decathlon events will be contested May 7-8 in Los Angeles, Calif., and hosted by UCLA before the remaining events will run May 14-15, also at UCLA.
