LOS ANGELES - UCLA freshman pitcher Anjelica Selden pitched a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead the 13th-ranked Bruins (21-10, 2-4 Pac-10) to a 4-0 win over 21st-ranked Arizona State (26-14, 1-7 Pac-10) on Friday afternoon at the newly renovated Easton Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Bruins took an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the second inning when, with one out, Lisa Dodd hit a solo home run off ASU starting pitcher Katie Burkhart (10-8). After Burkhart hit the next batter, Kristen Dedmon, Desiree Serrano relived Burkhart and got a fielder's choice and a strikeout to end the inning.
ASU looked to get the run right back in the top of the third. With two outs, Jen McCard reached on an infield single off UCLA's Selden (13-6). McCard the stole second to get into scoring position, but Selden got leadoff hitter Bridgette Caron to ground out to end the threat. The single turned out to be the only hit ASU would be able to produce on the afternoon.
In the bottom of the fifth, UCLA manufactured its second run of the game. Caitlin Benyi led off the frame with a single to left and moved to second on a Tara Henry sacrifice bunt. Andrea Duran followed with a double down the right field line to plate Benyi.
The Bruins then tallied two more run in the sixth off a two out rally to extend their lead to 4-0. Krista Colburn and Ashley Herrera each reached on consecutive singles. Serrano then intentionally walked Benyi to load the bases. However, Tara Henry, who was 0 for 2 on the day, singled to left to drive in both Colburn and Herrera. Ashley Werschky then relived Serrano and got Duran to fly out to end the inning.
Selden then set the Sun Devils down in order in the seventh inning, including two strikeouts to end the game.
Burkhart was saddled with the loss as she pitched just one and a third innings, allowing one run off two hits. Serrano went four and a third innings, giving up seven hits and three runs with two strikeouts.
Up next, the Sun Devils will head up to Seattle to face 24th-ranked Washington on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Fox Sports Northwest will televise the game live.
