TEMPE, Ariz. - Despite a solid defensive effort from the back line and junior goal keeper Kim Bingham, the Arizona State University soccer team fell to the visiting Oregon State Beavers, 1-0 in overtime, Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The match marked the opening of the Pac-10 Conference season for both teams. With the loss, the Sun Devils slipped to 5-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the league while the Beavers improved to 8-3-0 and 1-0-0 in Pac-10 play.
Both squads played a physical match with the Beavers collecting 21 fouls and the Sun Devils 13. Despite the free-kicks awarded to both sides, neither could find the back of the net in regulation. ASU's Bingham (Jr., Pleasanton, Calif.) posted four saves, including a sliding stop on a breakaway attempt in the second half to keep the match scoreless. Her counterpart, Melissa Onstad, recorded six saves, including a point-blank attempt, and received help in the form of one team save.
In the extra stanza, the Sun Devils opened as the aggressors, but neither of their three shots found their mark. Then, with four minutes elapsed in the first overtime session, Jodie Taylor slipped in behind the defense and collected a pass from Stacey Mescher. Taylor carried the ball as Bingham approached to cut the angle, but slipped a shot under the arms of the Sun Devil keeper and into the lower right corner of the net for the game-winning goal.
Overall offensively for the Sun Devils, Elizabeth Bogus (Sr., Sandy, Utah) took seven shots, including a pair on goal. One of her shots was a rocket from 20 yards out that hit both the cross bar and the left post before popping out of the box and being cleared by the Beaver defense in the second half. Brittany Cooper (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and Manya Makoski (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.) each contributed four shots in the match.
Arizona State returns to action Sunday at noon when the Oregon Ducks pay a visit to Tempe. The match will be the final of a five-match home stand for the Sun Devils. After hitting the road next weekend, ASU will play in its final home contests of the 2005 season on Oct. 21 and 23 as it plays host to Stanford and California, respectively.
