TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- ASU men's and women's swimming and diving lead UC Santa Barbara after the first day of a two-day dual meet Friday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. After trailing most of the meet, both the Sun Devil men's and women's squads captured the lead by winning the final event of the day (200 free relay).
On the men's side, sophomore C.J. Nuess (Medical Lake, Wash.) scored 16 points for the Sun Devils to help lead the way for the men's team. Nuess recorded the top time in the men's 400-yard IM with 3:58.23. Sophomore Lucas Azevedo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) added 12 points for the men by winning the 500-yard freestyle and placing third in the 200-yard freestyle.
Other Sun Devils to win their events were junior Richie Crowder (Los Gatos, Calif.) in the 100-yard freestyle and senior Joey Clements (Rowland Heights, Calif.) in the 200-yard breaststroke. ASU also won the men's 200-yard freestyle relay event with junior Cheyne O'Gorman (Vista, Calif.), Crowder, freshman Mohammed Madwa (Kuwait City, Kuwait) and freshman Sean Boyle (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) swimming the relay.
For the women, sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) tallied 13 points for the Sun Devils winning the 200-yard backstroke and placing second in the 200-yard butterfly. ASU scored 16 points in the 500 freestyle, with sophomore Ellis Schieman (Shaker Heights, Ohio), senior Kathryn Hennessy (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore Sarah Fischer (Boulder, Colo.) sweeping the top three places. Schieman also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and Fischer was runner-up in the 400-yard IM.
The Sun Devil women completed their comeback with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.85. Swimming on that relay team for ASU was senior Laura Ullrich (Centreville, Va.), senior Erin Baldinger (Phoenix, Ariz.), sophomore Lindsey Brown (Saginaw, Mich.) and freshman Jen Beckberger (Ajax, Ontario).
ASU will continue its meet with UCSB Saturday 10 a.m. at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Also competing on Saturday will be the Penn State women's swimming and diving team.
