TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Led by a trio of double-doubles from Nina Reeves, Nicole Morton and Margie Giordano, the Arizona State Sun Devils earned a 3-1 victory over Washington State Thursday night in Pac-10 volleyball action at Wells Fargo Arena. Game scores were 32-30, 30-12, 25-30, 30-26 in favor of the Sun Devils.
With the victory, ASU snapped an eight-match losing streak to improve to 7-13 overall and 2-8 in Pac-10 play. Washington State dropped its seventh straight match to fall to 8-15 overall and 1-9 in league play.
Junior outside hitter Nina Reeves (Gilbert, Ariz.) recorded a season-high with 22 kills and also added 18 digs for her 16th career double-double. Junior Nicole Morton (Fallbrook, Calif.) notched her fifth double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. She also contributed a team-high three service aces. Freshman outside hitter Margie Giordano (Glendale, Ariz.) recorded her team-high eighth double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs.
Sophomore libero Sydney Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) recorded her 10th match this season with 20 or more digs, anchoring ASU's defense with 23 digs. Senior setter Giovana Melo (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil) recorded a career-high with 66 assists.
The Cougars were led by 21 kills from junior middle blocker Natalia Owens and 12 kills from junior Jen Barcus. Freshman libero Jalen Pendon set WSU's single-match school record with 35 digs.
Trailing by as much as even points early in game one (down 16-9), ASU cut into the deficit and eventually tied the game at 25-25. Behind nine kills from Reeves and 11 digs from Donahue, ASU prevailed with the 32-30 victory.
Led by six kills from Morton and four each from Reeves and Giordano, ASU recorded its most decisive victory of the season with a 30-12 win in game two.
Battling through six tie scores, ASU pulled away late for a 30-26 win in game four to take the match from the Cougars. Morton and Giordano each tallied five kills to lead the Sun Devils to the victory.
The Cougars kept the match alive with a 30-25 victory in game three. Owens led the Cougars with six kills and Pendon recorded seven of her match-high 35 digs. Reeves again led the Devils with six kills, while Smith added five.
The Sun Devils return to action Friday night against the No. 2 University of Washington Huskies.
