PULLMAN, Wash. - The Arizona State University soccer team traveled to Pullman, Wash., Friday night for their first road conference match of the season and walked away with a 4-2 defeat of Washington State on the strength of two goals from Haley Stein. The Sun Devils improved to 7-5-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the Pac-10 while the Cougars slipped to 7-6-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the league.
ASU got off to a fast start as Brittany Cooper tallied at the 12:55 mark when she turned and shot from 20-yards out for what would become a 1-0 lead at the intermission. Following halftime, WSU tied the match at one when Carmen Anderson banked a free kick off the post and in at 51:22. But the Sun Devils responded three minutes later as Stein slipped a shot under the keeper for a 2-1 lead.
Just as ASU did, the Cougars answered with a goal at 66:09 from Sasha Baines on a header in the box. With the match clock winding down and the score tied at two, Stein responded again as she pushed home a rebound from a Manya Makoski shot that hit the post at the 82:02 mark. Elizabeth Bogus capped the scoring at 86:17 as she carried the ball on a breakaway from near midfield and scored her 10th goal of the season.
The Sun Devils close out their weekend road trip Sunday at noon when they take on Washington in Seattle.
