ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Arizona State University soccer team rolled to its second victory of the weekend Sunday afternoon as the Sun Devils handed Auburn a 4-1 defeat on the final day of action at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. ASU, which outscored its opponents, 7-2, on the weekend, improved to 4-2-0 on the year with the victory while the Tigers slipped to 1-4-1.
ASU took command of the match early as it tallied a pair of goals in the opening 20 minutes of play. With just 5:40 elapsed off the clock, Stephanie Ebner (Sr., Taylorsville, Utah) collected a pass from Manya Makoski (Sr., Trumbull, Conn.) and fired a shot from the top of the box to put the Sun Devils ahead, 1-0. With that assist, Makoski moved into a tie for second place on the all-time lists at ASU with 18, just six shy of the record.
Makoski was not done with that assist, however, as she would collect a pass from Albuquerque native Brittany Cooper before firing a shot from the ride side of the box to score her fourth goal of the season at 17:52. But the two-goal cushion did not last long, however, as Auburn scored at 18:55 when Rhonda Brooks scored on a penalty kick.
After both teams battled to score again, the Sun Devils found a way at the 79:54 mark with Makoski adding her second on the day to reestablish the team's two-goal lead. Makoski, who scored from the left side after dribbling past a defender, moved up to sixth on the ASU all-time scoring list by becoming the sixth player to record 60 or more points in a career.
ASU closed out the scoring when reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week Elizabeth Bogus (Sr., Sandy Utah), slipped a shot into the center of the net after receiving help from Cooper, her second assist on the day. Bogus also moved up in the all-time rankings as she now sits fourth in points at 62. Cooper is third with 64.
Upon completion of the matches Sunday, an all-tournament team was selected with four Sun Devils earning places among the Top 14 list. Makoski, who tallied three goals and one assist on the weekend, including the game-winning strike Sunday, was selected as the Co-Offensive MVP, sharing the honor with Kristine Sweat of New Mexico. Cooper, Ebner and Lauren Niblett (Jr., Chandler, Ariz.) all were selected to the All-Classic Team.
The Sun Devils return to the road next weekend as they are set to travel to the adidas/Hypertherm Classic in Hanover, N.H., hosted by Dartmouth. ASU opens the tournament against Villanova at 1 p.m. EST Friday before closing out the weekend with a 10 a.m. EST match against the host Big Green on Sunday. Minnesota is the fourth team entered into the event.
