CARSON, Calif. - A pair of national track and field meets were conducted June 23-26 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., with members of the Arizona State University track and field program, including former and future student-athletes, competing in the annual national championship meet. Both the 2005 USA Outdoor and 2005 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships were conducted at the same time representatives of ASU winning a pair of events and placing among the Top 8 in 11 events overall.
In the junior championships, current Sun Devil Sarah Stevens had a tremendous meet as she captured gold in the shot put with a winning toss of 16.90m (55-05.50), placed third in the hammer with a heave of 53.92m (176-11) and rounded out the weekend with a fourth-place showing in the discus with a toss of 49.91m (163-09). Stevens, who redshirted at ASU last season, will compete in her first varsity season for the Sun Devils in 2006.
The second victorious student-athlete came on the men's side of the junior meet as Ryan Whiting, a high school senior that has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for Arizona State starting this fall, captured the shot put crown with a winning throw of 19.74m (64-09.25). The top thrower in the high school ranks for the 2005 season, Whiting also placed second in the discus with a toss of 55.56m (182-03). Two other men competed in the junior division with Whiting, including a fellow thrower and one distance runner. In the field, Brad Roth, who was sitting ninth heading into the final round of the javelin event, uncorked a personal best throw of 64.01m (210-00) to vault all the way up to a third place finish. David Mehlhorn, who redshirted the 2005 season at ASU, finished fourth in the 3,000m steeplechase event in 9:23.08.
Former Sun Devil greats led the charge in the senior division of the championship weekend with a trio of athletes finishing as the runners-up in their respective events. Dwight Phillips, the 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist in the long jump, recorded a mark of 8.28m (27-02.00) to finish second in his signature event while also reaching the semifinal round of the 100m dash with the 19th-fastest time at 10.38. Also in the field, 2000 Olympic champion Nick Hysong also finished second in the pole vault as he cleared 5.65m (18-06.50) in the competition.
Lisa Galaviz (formerly Lisa Aguilera) also placed second in her event as she ran a personal-best time of 9:40.38 in the 3,000m steeplechase event. Vince Mosca rounded out the former Sun Devil contingent as he placed 14th in the preliminary round of the men's shot put with a toss of 19.09m (62-07.75).
Five student-athletes that were members of the 2005 Sun Devil roster also competed in the championship with only two reaching the finals of their events. On the women's side, Jessica Pressley, fresh off of her first All-America honor (hammer) this season, placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 16.41m (53-10.25) before placing 14th in the hammer at 57.34m (188-01). Julia Pedersen also competed in two throwing events, placing 13th at 15.70m (51-06.25) in the shot put and 19th at 51.12m (167-08) in the discus. Sprinter Porchea Carroll rounded out the women's entrants as she placed 14th in the preliminary round of the 200m dash (23.69).
The men were represented by two entries with one each in the field and on the track. Trevell Quinley advanced to the finals of the long jump where he placed ninth overall with a mark of 7.67m (25-02.00). Ryan Warrenburg, who also claimed his first All-America honor on the track earlier this season, placed 17th in the preliminary round of the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:50.25.
