TEMPE, Ariz. - The second day of the 2005 Baldy Castillo Invitational came to a close Saturday evening with members of the Arizona State University track and field teams combining to win 11 events and place 19 Sun Devils among the Top 3 in the annual event held inside Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe. ASU also recorded 11 marks that were good enough to earn its members berths into the NCAA West Region Championships later this year.
The sprints took center stage Saturday with the Sun Devil men and women each winning the 4x100m and 4x400m relays and both 400m dashes. For the women, the 4x100m relay clocked in at 44.87 to win and qualify for the regional meet while the 4x400m relay turned in a time of 3:42.42, just 0.42 seconds shy of qualifying. Their male counterparts blazed to a 39.35 in the 400m relay and finished at 3:12.88 in the mile relay event. Both marks qualify for the regional meet.
Individually in the sprints, Kandace Tucker captured the women's 100m dash in 11.85 while Christina Hardeman clocked a 55.33 to capture the 400m dash. Lewis Banda won the men's 200m dash at 20.84 while Seth Amoo finished first in the quarter at 46.70. Jessie McLaughlin rounded out the track victories for ASU as she edged teammate Victoria Jackson in the 800m run with a victorious mark of 2:09.22. Jackson was second at 2:09.53. In the field, Travis Jones won the discus with a heave of 52.29m and Ryan Zimmerman captured the triple jump in his first outdoor meet of the season with a leap of 15.29m.
Regionally, Jason Barton qualified in the 200m dash after finishing second to Banda at 21.12 while Brandon Glenn took second with a qualifying mark of 5.05m in the pole vault. Jessica Pressley, who qualified in two events Friday, added a third regional ticket as she recorded a throw of 50.91m in the discus. Former Sun Devil pole vaulter and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Nick Hysong competed in the pole vault Saturday and won the event with a stadium record 5.15m clearance.
A trio of competitions await the Sun Devils next week with a majority of the team staying home for the ASU Invitational Saturday. Several competitors will head south to Tucson for the Arizona Mutli-Events meet Thursday and Friday while several distance runners will compete in the Stanford Invitational Friday night.
