Despite Cassandra Jusino's victory in the all-around competition with a 39.25, No. 24 Oregon State defeated No. 23 Arizona State University, 194.3-193.325, in gymnastics Friday at Gill Coliseum. The Sun Devils are now 3-4 on the season and fall to 0-4 in Pacific-10 Conference action.
Jusino bested teammates April Boone (39.075), Ashley Kelly (38.95) and Mari Muth (37.65) to win the all-around title.
The Sun Devils were without the services of sophomore all-arounder Lauren Powell, who injured her right ankle last week versus UCLA. Powell, a junior, is expected to be out two weeks.
On ASU's first rotation, sophomore Cassandra Jusino tied a season-high with a 9.825, placing second. Kelly's 9.85 led the way for ASU and she took first-place honors. Boone (9.75) was fourth. Because ASU is so thin, freshman Taryn Shockley performed her first routine of the year on bars and posted a 9.3. ASU posted a 48.425 on bars, a season low. OSU recorded a 47.825.
On its second event, the vault, ASU posted its second-highest score of the season, a 48.5. Kelly led the way again with a season-high 9.9, good for first-place. Oregon State gymnasts captured the next four places with Megan Devencenzi and Angela Morales tying for second (9.875). Jusino tied for fourth (9.775).
Kelly won the balance beam with a score of 9.85. OSU's Chrissy Lamun was second (9.825) while teammate Daylee Ingalls, Jusino and Boone tied for third (9.8). Jusino had a season-high on beam.
On the floor exercise, Jusino took second with a 9.85. OSU's Morales won the event (9.875). Boone scored a 9.75, for fourth-place. Kelly did not fare well, posting a 9.35. ASU's team score of 48.55 was its second-highest floor score of the campaign. The Beavers registered a 48.7.
ASU's next competition is Friday, February 11 against Pac-10 foe California at 7:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena.
