SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The second day of the 2005 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships opened with some solid results for members of the Arizona State Univeristy wrestling team as five Sun Devils placed among the Top 6 following the conclusion of the consolation bracket bouts Monday inside Mott Gym in San Luis Obipso, Calif. ASU saw one wrestler finish third, fourth and sixth while two others took fifth place.

As a team, the Sun Devils sit in first place overall with 102 points while defending champion Boise State sits in second with 91 points. UC Davis sits third at 82 points while Oregon (81) and Cal Poly (79) round out the Top 5.

The placing rounds did not start the way the Sun Devils would have liked as No. 4 Jeremy Mendoza (Jr., Temecula, Calif.) was forced to medically forfeit his third-place bout to No. 2 Andrew Hochstrasser (BSU) becuase of an injury sustained in his defeat of No. 6 Nathan Peterson of Stanford one bout earlier. In the battle for fifth place at 133, John Espinoza (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) came close to winning, but could not overcome Martin Mitchell of Oregon in the end, falling 5-3. Espinoza finished sixth in the conference event, his first as a Sun Devil starter.

From there, No. 2 Patrick Williams (Sr., Homestead, Fla.) rebounded from his second loss of the tournament by scoring a 14-6 major decision over No. 4 Daniel Murphree of UC Davis to claim fifth place in the event. Based upon how the 149 bracket shook down, Williams earned a bout with No. 3 Jeff Owens (CPU) to see who would earn "true fourth". In that battle, Williams fought off Owens with one arm, literally becuase of a prior shoulder injury, to force overtime with a takedown with four seconds remaining in regulation. In the overtime period, Williams scored a takedown just 15 seconds in and won the bout, 11-9.

At 165, No. 6 Patrick Pitsch (Fr., Spanaway, Wash.) earned third place and an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships as he used riding time to defeat No. 4 Brody Barrios (CPU), 2-1. Pitsch becomes the fifth Sun Devil to punch his ticket to the national tournament joining ASU four conference finalists, Brian Stith (So., Hampton, Va.) at 157, C.B. Dollaway (Jr., Mt. Gilead, Ohio) at 184, Ryan Bader (Jr., Reno, Nev.) at 197 and heavyweight Cain Velasquez (Jr., Yuma, Ariz.).

No. 6 Rick Renzi (Fr., Flagstaff, Ariz.) rounded out the Sun Devils' consolation draw as he battled Chet McBee of Oregon for fifth place and came out on top with a 5-3 decision. Renzi will now have to wait to see if he is awarded one of the conference's 10 wildcard positions to the NCAA meet in March.

In the opening round of the day, two Sun Devils were victorious while three others fell in their bid for third place in the conference. Mendoza and Pitsch each won their bouts with Mendoza securing a 5-3 decision over Peterson (SU) at 125 before Pitsch recorded an 8-2 decision over Frank Richmond of UC Davis. At 133, Espinoza lost an 11-1 major decision to No. 3 Derek Moore (UCD) before Williams suffered his second defeat of the event, this time in an 8-6 decision to Anthony Baza (CSB). The final bout of the consolation semifinals was No. 1 Ronnie Silva (UCD) recording an 11-1 major decision over Renzi at 174.

The championship finals close out the 2005 event this evening with wrestling starting at 6 p.m. PST.
