TEMPE, Ariz. -- Freshman outside hitter Kristin Trayser had 13 kills and sophomore Nicole Morton added 11 kills and 12 digs to highlight the annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage held Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena. The Gold team won the best-of-three match by scores of 30-25, 28-30, 30-23. Morton (Bonsall, Calif.) notched the only double-double of the scrimmage with 11 kills and 12 digs. Trayser (Crystal Lake, Ill.), who is one of seven freshmen on the roster that was named one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, added three total blocks to her match-high 13 kills. Competing for the starting setter position, and playing for both the Maroon and Gold, were freshman Rachel Mittelstaedt (Phoenix, Ariz.) and senior Giovana Melo (Ribeirao Preto, Brazil). Mittelstaedt recorded a combined 40 assists while Melo added 51. Freshman libero Sydney Donahue (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led all players with 19 combined digs while playing for both squads. Assistant coaches Terri Cox-Spann and Jami Coughlin added experience to the Gold team. Cox-Spann and Coughlin are ranked number two and three respectively in school history for career digs. They are also among 11 players in ASU history to record 1,000 or more digs and kills in their careers.
