TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Arizona State junior starting pitcher Jason Urquidez scattered five hits and one run in seven strong innings to lead the No. 15 Sun Devils to a 5-1 victory over No. 24 Oral Roberts Friday night at Packard Stadium. Junior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch plated the only runs ASU would need in the game with a two-run home run in the second inning.
The non-conference victory snapped a season-high three-game losing streak for the Devils (longest since start of 2002 season) and improved their record to 23-10 overall. ASU also gained its 11th victory over a ranked opponent this season. Oral Roberts had its six-game win streak come to an end to fall to 25-7.
Urquidez (Simi Valley, Calif.) walked the first two batters of the game and then settled down to throw another gem. The transfer from Central Arizona College registered six strikeouts and gave up only one run in seven innings to improve to 8-2 on the year. Hard-throwing freshman right-hander Zechry Zinicola (San Bernadino, Calif.) was impressive for the second straight night closing out the win with two scoreless frames.
ORU junior starter Rene Recio was touched for six hits and two runs in a predetermined four-inning start. Senior transfer Adam Lesko (UNLV) finished off the game giving up five hits and three runs in the final four innings.
Gosewisch (Scottsdale) connected on his second home run of the year to put ASU on the board in the second inning. The junior finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Redshirt freshman third baseman Seth Dhaenens (Chandler) added his second straight multi-hit game (2-for-3, R) and Jeff Larish (2-for-4) and Nick Walsh (2-for-4) each added two hits.
The Golden Eagles (25-7) got two hits from second baseman Brian Hanson as ORU was limited to only six hits. Third baseman Jon Tackett scored ORU's only run when he reached on a hit-by-pitch and later scored on a Urquidez wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning.
The Sun Devils and Golden Eagles will meet in the rubber match Saturday at 1 p.m. Senior right-hander Jeff Mousser (1-2, 4.12 ERA) will start for the Sun Devils against ORU senior right-hander Sean Sorrow (4-1, 2.01 ERA).
