TEMPE, Ariz. - Eight members of the Arizona State track and field teams competed in one event each Friday evening to open a weekend of competition for the Sun Devils as they participate in three meets in two days. Five individuals competed at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, while three throwers entered the UC San Diego Open in LaJolla, Calif.
At the prestigious Drake Relays, Trevell Quinley earned the top finish of the day for the Sun Devils as he took home fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 7.37m (24-2.25). His mark also met qualifying standards for both the NCAA West Region and Pac-10 Championship meets. On the track, the men's 4x800m relay team of Greg Halver, Jay DeGroot, Jeff Dodge and Dan Maher clocked a 7:30.16 to place sixth in the race.
In southern California, Travis Jones led the throwers as he placed ninth overall in the men's hammer with a mark of 56.68m (185-11). His mark was good enough to qualify him for the regional meet. Teammate Andrew Smith placed 24th in the same event with a throw of 50.05m (164-2). On the women's side, Sandra Orsund placed 22nd in the hammer competition with a best of 48.74 (159-11).
Competition at both the Drake Relays and UC San Diego Open continue Saturday with the Oregon Invitational also being contested in Eugene, Ore.
