TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Washington left fielder Zach Clem hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and broke a 6-6 tie with a two-run single in the ninth to give the Huskies a 8-6 come-from-behind victory over the No. 8 Arizona State Sun Devils Sunday afternoon at Packard Stadium.
The win gave the Huskies a 2-1 series victory after winning 11-1 Friday and losing 9-4 on Saturday. UW improved to 15-7-1 overall and 2-1 in Pac-10 play. ASU dropped its second consecutive Pac-10 home series to fall to 21-7 overall and 2-4 in league action.
The Devils built a 5-2 lead after a two-run home run from sophomore right fielder Travis Buck (Richland, Wash.) in the sixth inning. The Huskies pulled ahead for the first time in the game with the two-out grand slam from Clem in the seventh. ASU reliever Quentin Andes (Albuquerque, N.M.) hit a batter and gave up a single before freshman closer Pat Bresnehan (Sherborn, Mass.) took over. Bresnehan struck out Brent Lillibridge and then hit Greg Isaacson to load the bases. Clem then drilled a 3-1 offering from Bresnehan over the right field fence for his team-leading seventh home run of the year.
ASU pulled even in the bottom half of the seventh with a solo home run from Nick Cadena (Glendale). UW rallied in the eighth putting a runner in scoring position before right fielder Matt Tucker was robbed of an extra base hit with a diving catch by ASU left fielder Jeff Larish (Tempe). ASU also had a chance to pull ahead in the eighth, but again left runners in scoring position when All-American closer Will Fenton got Cadena to strike out.
Washington pulled ahead in the ninth with a two-run single up the middle by Clem. A costly one-out error by freshman first baseman Joe Persichina (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) fueled the UW rally. Clem battled Bresnehan to a full count before lining a ball up the middle to score two runs.
The Devils rallied in the bottom of the ninth putting a pair of runners on with no outs, but Fenton got All-American shortstop Dustin Pedroia (Woodland, Calif.) to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play and senior second baseman Nick Walsh (Alamo, Calif.) to fly out to center field to seal the victory.
Fenton earned the victory to improve to 3-2 on the year with 1.1 scoreless innings. Freshman starter Richie Lentz lasted only 1.1 innings after walking five and giving up two runs. Reliever Trent Baysinger kept the Huskies in the game giving up seven hits and four runs in 6.1 innings.
Bresnehan took the loss for the Sun Devils, falling to 3-1 on the season. The hard-throwing right-hander gave up four hits and four runs in 2.2 innings. Freshman starter Zechry Zinicola (San Bernadino, Calif.) was solid giving up three hits and one earned run in 4.0 innings, but had to leave the gave after aggravating a groin injury.
ASU build a 5-2 lead despite leaving several runners in scoring position. ASU scored two in the second behind a double from Pedroia and another run crossed the plate on a fielding error by Clem in left field. Pedroia extend the lead to 3-0 with a two-out single up the middle to plate catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (Scottsdale).
UW pulled to within one run at 3-2 after a two-run fourth inning. Buck gave ASU a three-run cushion with his seventh home run of the year, a two-run shot to right field off Baysinger.
ASU ended up leaving 14 runners on base, including nine in scoring position. Pedroia went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Buck added his eighth multi-hit game going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Cadena and Persichina also added multi-hit games as ASU out-hit the Huskies 10-8 in the game.
Clem led the Dawgs going 3-for-4 with six RBI and finished the series 6-for-12 (.500) with two home runs and nine RBI. Right fielder Matt Tucker was the only other Husky with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Lillibridge, who was a teammate of Pedroia and Jeff Larish on Team USA last summer, was limited to one hit, but had a key double to lead off the ninth-inning rally.
