BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Marquise Kately scored a season-high 24 points and Richard Midgley added 20, all in the second half, as California beat Arizona State 85-83 Saturday.
Leon Powe added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Bears (11-9, 7-4 Pac-10), who have won three straight and five of their last six. Amit Tamir also scored 13 for California.
Ike Diogu scored a game-high 33 points for Arizona State (8-12, 2-9), which missed a chance to win when Kevin Kruger's rushed 3-point attempt fell short at the buzzer.
Midgley hit two free throws to give the Bears an 85-78 lead with 1:34 to play, but Arizona State made it close with five quick points. Wilfried Fameni hit a 3-pointer and then Jason Braxton had a steal and a lay-up to make it 85-83 with 53 seconds remaining.
The Sun Devils got the ball back on a turnover, but could not get a clear shot and had to settle for Kruger's hurried 3-point attempt.
California led for most of the first half, but scored only two baskets over the final 9:20 and trailed 42-40 at the break.
The Bears hit 26 of a season-high 42 free throws, the most attempts from the line by a California team since Dec. 11, 2000, when they put up 45 against Albany. Kately was 10-of-17 from the line.
Jamal Hill scored 17 points and Kruger added 12 for Arizona State.
