TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field teams split its team in two for the weekend as several of its members made a return visit to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Moutain 'T' Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona while the remainder of the Sun Devils competed at the United Heritage Invitational in Boise, Idaho, hosted by Boise State. Combined, the Sun Devils earned one NCAA automatic berth and 10 more provisional marks while winning one event and finishing runner-up in four others on the day.

In Boise, the men's 4x400m relay of Seth Amoo (Jr., Palmdale, Calif.), Lewis Banda (So., Bulawayo, Zimbabwe), Jason Barton (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) and Steve Fitch (Sr., San Ramon, Calif.) posted a 3:08.41 to earn an automatic spot into the NCAA Indoor Championships in the event. Though they met the standards, the team suffered its first head-to-head loss in the last two indoor seasons as Baylor and LSU crossed the finish line first. Banda (second), Fitch (fifth), Domenik Peterson (Fr., Jefferson City, Mo.) (sixth) and Barton (ninth) each turned in provisional marks in the open 400m dash as well. Peterson also provisionally qualified for the 200m dash with the second-fastest mark in school history at 21.18 while Amoo clocked a 21.43 to meet the provisional standards. The men's final top finish came in the 60m dash with Steven Koehnemann (Fr., Chandler, Ariz.) taking second in the preliminaries (6.84) before finishing fourth in the finals.

On the women's side, the 4x400m relay of Christina Hardeman (So., Sunnyvale, Calif.), Jacquelyn Johnson (Fr., Yuma, Ariz.), Cassandra Reed (Jr., Avondale, Ariz.) and Kandace Tucker (So., Irving, Texas) finished second in the event with a 3:41.19 to earn a provisional mark by 0.01. Johnson went on to finish second the high jump (1.70m/5-7) to round out the runner-up finishes. Another member of the relay, Tucker, finished third in the preliminaries of the 60m dash (7.55) before placing fifth in the finals.

Jennifer Kowacz (Jr., Goodyear, Ariz.) earned her third personal best mark of the year in the shot put as she won the event with a heave of 15.87m (52-1.00). Her mark was the second-best in school history and also was a provisional toss. The women's other provisional qualifier in the Mountain 'T' meet was Julia Pedersen (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.) in the shot put with a third-place throw of 15.36m (50-4.75). Jessica Pressley (Fr., Elk Grove, Calif.) finished second in the weight throw to complete the women's Top 3 finishers.

On the men's side, Kal? Pittman (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.) who captured the bronze in the long jump with a mark of 7.13m (23-4.75).

Next weekend, ASU will divide its ranks into three groups for three different meets. Some members will travel to Boise, Idaho, for the Bronco Invitational while another group will head to Seattle for the Pac-10 Indoor Invitational. The third group will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., the home of the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships, for the Tyson Foods Invitational. All three meets will run Feb. 13-14.
