AUSTIN, Texas - The Arizona State University swimming and diving teams finished the first day of competition at the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center with the women sitting in fourth place while the men are in seventh. The women set eight NCAA consideration times on the day, including three individual personal bests. Thomas McCrummen had a strong showing in the diving pool for the men, claiming second-place honors in the 1-meter finals.
The women's 200 freestyle relay team of Florencia Szigeti, Caitlin Andrew, Laura Ullrich and Erin Baldinger started off the evening with a third-place finish, and NCAA consideration time of 1:32.37. This puts them third on ASU's all-time top ten list.
Sarah A Fischer followed the relay performance with a personal best and fourth-place finish in the 500 freestyle event (4:48.59). Andrew claimed fifth in the 100 butterfly with an NCAA consideration time of 54.07, which is a personal best for her in that event and puts her second on ASU's all-time list.
Szigeti swam a season best in the 50 freestyle (23.18), which is just shy of her personal best. Andrew set another personal best in the 50 free with an NCAA consideration time of 23.42. Her preliminary time of 23.39 puts her sixth on ASU all-time top ten. The 400 medley relay team of Baldinger, Heidi Schmidt, Andrew and Szigeti rounded out the evening for the women recording a NCAA consideration time (3:42.96) and finished fourth.
Schmidt and Sally Brown swam in the B-final of the 200 IM, each recording NCAA consideration times of 2:03.53 and 2:03.77, respectively.
In the diving pool for the women, Trisha Tumlinson was the only Sun Devil to make it to the final round of the 3-meter springboard. She recorded a 490.30 in the first 11-dive event on the year for the squad.
The Sun Devil men had a strong showing in the diving pool as McCrummen finished second (319.30) and Brant Bingham claimed seventh (266.35).
Lucas Azevedo was the only man to make the finals on the first day of competition finishing eighth in the 500 freestyle (4:29.59). His preliminary time of 4:26.78 is good for his first NCAA consideration time.
Bobby Crowder swam in the B-Final for the men in the 200 IM. His preliminary time of 1:50.19 is a personal best. Richie Crowder set a season best (20.59) in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle, earning him a spot to swim in the B-Final where he finished sixth.
The men's 400 medley relay team of Evan Rahaeuser, CJ Nuess, John Dwelley and R. Crowder set a season-best time (3:24.73) swimming ten seconds faster than their preliminary time to finish 11th overall.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue action tomorrow in the second day of the Texas Invitational. The meet runs through Saturday, December 4.
