Ike Diogu led ASU with 32 points and nine boards as Arizona State topped Delaware State 67-56 Tuesday night. The Sun Devils next play UTEP in the Las Vegas Invitational Friday.
Kevin Kruger added 12 points off the bench for ASU, including three three-point field goals, one of which he was fouled and converted the four-point play.
Diogu, the nation's third-leading returning scorer from a year ago, tied his own school record with 18 free throws made in 21 attempts. He made 18-of-23 last year against Western Michigan while current Charlotte Bobcat Eddie House made 18-of-19 against California on Jan. 8, 2000, when he tied the Pac-10 record with 61 points.
ASU led 35-25 with just over a minute left in the first half but a DSU rally cut it to 35-31 at intermission. ASU moved the lead to 56-47 with under nine minutes remaining and held on from there. DSU had cut the lead to as little as 48-45 with just over 11 minutes left.
It marked the sixth 30-point game for Diogu, who just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. It marked the 11th time in his 61 game career he has posted nine boards, while he notched his 61st straight game in double digits.
