TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field team completed first-day action at the NCAA West Region Championships Saturday at Stanford with several Sun Devils earning a spot in the NCAA Championship meet it two weeks. In the women's team race, host Stanford has opened up a commanding lead, accumulating 45 points, while the Sun Devils hold a slight edge for second place with 16 points. On the men's side, the Sun Devils are in a tie for 18th with one point while Stanford is the leader with 46.

Tiffany Greer, two weeks after claiming her third Pac-10 Championship title in the long jump with a 6.36m jump, duplicated her winning performance with a regional title at the same distance. Porchea Carroll leaped to eighth place with a 5.85m jump while Tinishia Johnson claimed 10th with a jump of 5.79m.

On the track, several Sun Devils turned in stellar times. Seneca Holmes finished second in the third heat of the 100m hurdles with a blistering 13.31 to set a new personal record and move into the No. 4 all-time spot in Arizona State history. Holmes enters the finals with the sixth-fastest time. Dan Maher, though he fell just shy of qualifying for the Sunday finals, ran his fastest time of the year in the preliminaries of the 1,500m run at 3:48.47.

The men and women fared well in the 5,000m run, the only running events contested as finals. For the women, Jessica Scalzo finished out of the qualifying range with a 12th-place finish (17:01.53). On the men's side, Fasil Bizuneh clocked in at 14:02.91 to place eighth and earn the only team point for the men so far in the competition.

In a set up for Sunday, the women's 4x100m relay (first), Luiz Mello (sixth in the 100m dash) have all qualified for the finals and will need to place in the Top 5 of their respective races to advance to the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA West Region Championship meets concludes Saturday with finals in all running events as well as eight field events.
