TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State track and field team opened the first day of action at the Baldy Castillo Invitational Friday with five Sun Devils taking first place in their respective events. The meet, being held at Sun Angel Stadium on the campus of ASU, features several teams including Ohio State, Minnesota, Utah, UC Santa Barbara, Notre Dame and St. John's.

The Sun Devils winning events were Desiree Davila in the women's 1,500m run, Roger Cahill in the men's 1,500m run, Tinishia Johnson in the women's long jump, Becky Holley in the women's javelin and Julia Pedersen in the women's shot put. Several other ASU athletes also placed in the Top 3 of their respective events.

In the women's 1,500m run, Davila, Amanda Lyon and Joanie Baca each qualified for the Pac-10 Championships while Davila also earned a spot in the NCAA regional meet. Also for the women, Cody Sohn (3,000m steeplechase) qualified for the conference meet while Sandra Orsund (hammer and shot), Johnson (long jump), Holley (javelin) and Pedersen (shot) each recorded marks to earn a spot both the regional and conference meets at the end of the year. The men were not as fortunate as no male athlete qualified for either event.

The Baldy continues Saturday with the field events picking up at 11 a.m. and the running events starting at 1 p.m. All events take place at Sun Angel Stadium.
