TEMPE, Ariz. - The 10th-ranked Arizona State softball team (15-4) opening the evening setting a school record by scoring 10 runs in one inning with a 16-0 shutout in five innings over UC Riverside (4-9), but fell in the second game to ninth-ranked Oklahoma (9-4), 7-2. The Oklahoma game was delayed 15 minutes due to rain showers.
Against UCR, the Devils posted six runs in the second and 10 in the fourth inning. In the second inning, UCR committed three errors that helped to lead to the six runs. Kim Zadrozny got her first career hit and RBI as she singled home one run. Valerie Sevilla doubled in two more runs, while Kara Brun hit her third home run of the year over the center field fence for two more RBIs.
In the fourth, Phelan Wright singled in Kristin Farber and Sevilla, who had each singled earlier to get on. Adriana Garcia, Ashley Werschky and Brun also added RBI singles, while Wright capped the game with a three-run single.
Werschky (3-0) started the game, going four innings with four hits before giving way to Cheryl Evans for the final inning. UCR's Kimberly Dillon started the game, allowing six hits and six runs (3 earned). Jenell Jackson pitched the last two innings, giving up 10 runs (4 earned) on nine hits.
Against the Sooners, the Devils jumped ahead 1-0 on a leadoff solo home run by Garcia in the second. A rain shower then occurred to delay the game 15 minutes, but when the game resumed, Oklahoma countered with a two-run home run by Christina Enea in the fourth to go ahead 2-1. The Devils tied the game back up in there half of the fourth. Wright doubled to right center, then was advanced to third on a ground out by Garcia. Werschky followed with a hot shot to the Sooner's shortstop Kelli Braitsch, but she misplayed the ball allowing Wright to score. Oklahoma then exploded for six runs in the sixth to seal the win. Oklahoma got a two run homer from Jennifer Stump and a solo shot from starting pitcher Kami Keiter.
Desiree Serrano (9-3) started for the Devils as she went five and a third, suffering her first loss in six games. She allowed nine hits and four earned runs. Susan Aguilar finished the final inning and two-thirds, giving up five hits and two runs. Keiter, limited the Devils to three hits and two runs, one unearned.
Up next, the Devils will face Oklahoma again on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and UC Riverside at 7:00 p.m.
