TEMPE, Ariz. - Three runs in the first and fifth innings propelled the 13th-ranked Arizona State softball team (2-0) to a 6-3 victory over Texas San Antonio (0-2) tonight at Farrington Stadium.
UTSA posted the first run in the top if the first off of two singles and a pass ball. The Sun Devils would then come back in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own. Jennifer Forner opened the frame with a walk, then advanced to second when Kristin Farber was hit by a pitch in the neck area. Kara Brun then drilled a double to left centerfield to score Forner and bring Farber to third. Cheryl Evans followed with a single to left field to drive in Farber, while Adriana Garcia reached on fielder's choice to drive in Brun for the third run.
UTSA would get one run back in the fifth when Jennifer Davis doubled in Jessica Els, who had earlier hit a double to start the inning. But the Devils would answer again with three more runs to seal the game. Forner doubled down the right field line and then advanced to third when Brun hit an infield single to deep short. Phelan Wright was then walked to load the bases for Evans, who followed with a hard single to the centerfield wall, scoring Forner and Brun. Garcia then singled to center, scoring Wright for the final tally.
In the sixth inning, Evans (1-0) was replaced by Susan Aguilar who then gave up a solo homerun to Jessica Rogers for UTSA's third run. With two outs in the sixth, Desiree Serrano relived Aguilar to get the final out. Serrano then retired the Roadrunners in order in the seventh to post her second save in as many games.
Brun continued her hot start with a 2-for-3 night with two runs scored and an RBI, while Evans also went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Garcia chipped in with two RBIs as well.
Up next the two teams will face off in the final game of the three game series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
