TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State cross country teams competed in the NCAA West Region Championships Saturday at Blue Lake Park in Portland, Ore., with the women capturing fourth place and the men taking eighth. Amy Hastings (So., Leavenworth, Kan.) continued her sensational season as she crossed the finish in second place to pace the women while Aaron Aguayo (So., Phoenix) led the men with his 28th-place finish.
The Top 2 teams in each region earn automatic berths into the NCAA Championships. The women's entries went to winner Stanford (45 points) and UCLA (69) with Washington (94), ASU (112) and UC Santa Barbara (175) rounding out the Top 5. The Cardinal men won in convincing fashion with 18 points and will be joined at the national meet by Cal Poly (110). The Top 5 was completed by Arizona (132), Washington (162) and Oregon (164) with the Sun Devils in eighth with 189 points. Both Sun Devil squads will learn if they are one of 13 at-large selections when the NCAA announces the complete field Monday.
Hastings clocked a time of 20:22 to capture second place and continue the success she has enjoyed all season. To date, Hastings has won two races and finished second, third and fourth overall as well. As a Top 25 finisher, Hastings earned all-region honors and was joined on the team by fellow Sun Devils Anna Masinelli (So., Scottsdale, Ariz.), 7th place at 20:42, and Desiree Davila (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif.), 15th place at 20:54. True freshmen Corey Randall (Cincinnati) and Jessica Crate (Brights Grove, Ontario) finished 33rd and 61st, respectively, to round out the team scoring for ASU. Also competing in the race were Liz Lindgren (So., Klamath Falls, Ore.) and Amanda Lyon (So., Phoenix), who finished 72nd and 86th, respectively.
"The women ran pretty well today," Walt Drenth, ASU head coach, said. "Our Top 3 runners ran exceptionally well and Corey Randall and Liz Lindgren both had good races. Amanda Lyon, who was nursing a foot injury, was still able to finish the race and that shows the determination she has to help the team succeed. Now, we have to wait and see if we make the national meet. I feel with how well we have done this year, we should make the field."
For the third time this season, Aguayo led the charge as he clipped the tape at 30:27 with teammates Roger Cahill (So., Glendale, Ariz.) and Ryan Warrenburg (So., Franklin, Ind.) finishing just two (30th) and three (31st) spots behind him, respectively. J.J. Duke (Jr., Clovis, Calif.) took 41st place and Juan Reyes (Jr., Phoenix) finished 59th to round out the scoring. Kal Clark (Fr., Louisville, Ky.) took 75th in his first regional race while team veteran Dan Maher (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) captured 85th in the meet.
"It was not a bad run by the men's team today," Drenth said. "It is very disappointing for the athletes and for me that we did not finish higher. We trained well all year and did the things we needed to do to stay in shape and avoid injuries. Juan Reyes did experience some pain in his back and that hampered his run. If he felt better and finished up with Aaron Aguayo, that lowers our score and puts right back in the team race."
The NCAA will announce the at-large berths at 5 p.m. CT Monday. The national meet will be contested Nov. 24 at the Byrnes Park/Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa.
